Asta history tells of a civil war fought within their first few generations. During this war, a rebel faction which resented their D'Teth creators conquered Asta civilization and drove the D'Teth extinct. The cost of this war was intense, and the Asta – utilizing D'Teth technology they didn't fully understand – would need centuries to rebuild.

During this reconstruction, the Astas established regional governments which reported to larger and larger ruling circles. Historians believe this system may have been based on stories of human governance.

The first rulers were predominantly figures from the war of independence, already respected as leaders among the Astas. However, a system of elections was soon setup to allow everyone a hand in choosing their representation. To this day, they still use a republican form of government descended from these early councils. Local governments report to planetary councils, which in turn report to a central council in the capital system. The central council elects a Prime Minister whose function is moderating and directing the council meetings.
